Our Founding Director, Amin Ahmad, was invited to attend the Economic Freedom Network Conference 2014, held in Hong Kong from 6 to 7 November. The theme for this year conference is “Promoting Growth, Reducing Inequality”.
After the welcoming remarks from Bill Stacey, the Chairman of the Lion Rock Institute, a free market think tank based in Hong Kong and Siegfried Herzog, the Regional Director for Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) in Southeast and East Asia, the programme started with a keynote address by Profesor Razeen Sally, the Director at European Centre for International Political Economy and also a visiting Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, The National University of Singapore.
Many other speakers also took part in the conference, among others are H.E. John Tsang, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong SAR, Dr. Tom Palmer (Atlas Network), Dr. Ken Schoolland (International Society for Individual Liberty, Hawaii), Dr. Parth Shah (Centre for Civil Society, India), Dr Sethaput Suthiwart-Narueput (Thailand Future Foundation), Professor, Michael X.Y. Feng (Cathay Institute for Public Affairs, China), Barun Mitra (Liberty Institute, India) and Wan Saiful Wan Jan (IDEAS, Malaysia). The Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) Report 2014 has also been presented by Fred McMahon from the Fraser Institute during the program.
Furthermore, our director had an opportunity to listen to a Council for Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD)-EFN Asia joint session that bring some interesting speakers, such as Hon. Oyun Sanjaasuren, MP Chairperson, Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats who is also the President, United Nations Environmental Assembly and a Minister of Environment and Green Development, Mongolia; Hon. Markus Löning, former German Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid; Hon. Sin Chung Kai, MP Legislative Councillor, Hong Kong Democratic Party of Hong Kong; Hon. Saumura Tioulong, MP Member of the Cambodian National Assembly; Hon. Jay Kun Yoo, former Member of Parliament Uri Party, South Korea who is already 79 years old and had an opportunity to work with Kim Dae Jung, the former President of Korean Republic; Hon. Kenneth Chen Wei-on, SBS Secretary General of the Secretariat Hong Kong Legislative Council, Dr. Chee Soon Juan, Secretary General, Singapore Democratic Party who is also a former Chairperson for CALD, Dr Juli Minoves – Triquell, President, Liberal International and Martin Lee

Within a limited free time, our founding director also took an opportunity to observe the Umbrella Movement protest at several key areas – Admiralty, Nathan Road, Legislative Council (LegCo) and Causeway Bay.
